Cover Letter Ireland: The 2026 Template Recruiters Actually Read

Do you even need a cover letter in Ireland in 2026?

Short answer: yes, when it is asked for, and often even when it is not. Irish hiring is still relationship-driven, Dublin, Cork and Galway are small markets where recruiters remember candidates who make their life easier. A well-written cover letter is the fastest way to stand out from 300 CVs that all look the same.

The 4-paragraph structure that works in Ireland

Forget the "Dear Sir/Madam, please find attached" template your uncle used. Here is the structure we use with HULA coaching clients who land roles in Ireland every month.

Paragraph 1, The hook (2-3 lines)

Name the role, the company, and one specific reason you are excited. Not "I am passionate about your mission", something concrete. Example: "I am applying for the Senior Marketing Manager role at Stripe Dublin. I have spent the last four years scaling B2B SaaS content in the EMEA market, most recently taking organic pipeline from €0 to €2.3M ARR at [Company]."

Paragraph 2, Proof (4-5 lines)

Pick 2-3 achievements from your CV that map directly to the job description. Use numbers. Irish hiring managers care about impact, not responsibilities.

Paragraph 3, Why Ireland, why them (3-4 lines)

If you are relocating, address it head-on. Mention Stamp 4, Critical Skills Employment Permit, or EU citizenship, recruiters worry about visa complications and you can defuse that in one sentence. If you are already in Ireland, mention what specifically drew you to this company.

Paragraph 4, The close (2 lines)

Ask for the interview. Not "I look forward to hearing from you", try "I would love a 20-minute call next week to walk through how I would approach your Q1 pipeline goals."

Formatting rules for Ireland

  • One page. Never two.
  • Date in DD/MM/YYYY format.
  • Address it to a real person if you can find them on LinkedIn.
  • Save as PDF, name it Firstname-Lastname-Cover-Letter.pdf.
  • Match the font to your CV. Consistency signals attention to detail.

What Irish recruiters told us they hate

We asked 40 recruiters across Dublin tech, finance and pharma what makes them bin a cover letter instantly:

  1. Generic openings. "To whom it may concern" is a red flag.
  2. Copy-pasted from another application. They can tell.
  3. Any mention of "passionate" without evidence.
  4. Longer than one page.
  5. Talking about what the job will do for you, not what you will do for them.
