Before you write a word
The CV comes first
Irish recruiters open the CV before the cover letter. Use the free Irish CV templates built to the same standard so both documents read as one application.
Answer the advert, not your biography
Pick the three requirements the advert repeats most and make sure each one is answered with a specific result in paragraph two.
Say your status out loud
If you are not an Irish or EU citizen, one line on work authorisation removes the biggest silent rejection reason in Ireland.
The Irish cover letter format, paragraph by paragraph
Keep it to one page. Every paragraph has one job.
Header and greeting
Name, phone with +353 or international code, email and LinkedIn URL. Date. Then "Dear Hiring Manager" or the recruiter's name if the advert gives one. No home address, no photo.
Paragraph 1: the role and your hook (2 sentences)
Name the exact job title and where you saw it, then your strongest relevant result in one sentence with a number. Example: "I am applying for the Senior Product Designer role advertised on LinkedIn. At my current company I led the redesign that lifted onboarding completion from 41 to 68 percent."
Paragraph 2: proof (3 to 4 sentences)
Pick the top three requirements in the advert and answer each with a specific achievement, using the advert's own wording. This is where ATS keyword matching and recruiter trust both happen.
Paragraph 3: why them, plus logistics (2 to 3 sentences)
One genuine reason you want this employer, not a generic compliment. Then one line each on work authorisation ("Stamp 4, no sponsorship required"), location or relocation date, and notice period.
Paragraph 4: the ask (1 to 2 sentences)
"I would welcome a 20 minute call this week to talk through how I could contribute to the team. Thank you for your time." Sign off with "Kind regards" and your full name.

The same structure works for the UK with UK spelling and "right to work in the UK" instead of Stamp or permit wording.
What gets an Irish cover letter ignored
- ·Opening with "I am writing to apply for" and a paragraph about yourself before naming the role.
- ·Repeating the CV instead of answering the advert's top requirements.
- ·Superlatives (passionate, dynamic, results-driven) with no numbers behind them.
- ·No mention of work authorisation, so the recruiter assumes sponsorship is needed.
- ·A generic letter that could be sent to any company, with the wrong company name still in it.
- ·Going over one page, or attaching it as an image or a design file.

How long should a cover letter be in Ireland?+
One page maximum, ideally three to four short paragraphs of about 250 to 350 words in total. Irish recruiters skim a cover letter in under 20 seconds, so the first paragraph has to name the role and your strongest relevant result.
Do I need a cover letter for every job application in Ireland?+
Not always. Many Irish tech and agency applications ignore it. It noticeably improves response rates for graduate roles, career changes, public sector and semi-state jobs, and any application where you need to explain relocation or work authorisation.
How do I address a cover letter if I do not know the hiring manager?+
Use "Dear Hiring Manager" or the team name, for example "Dear Engineering Team". Avoid "To whom it may concern", which reads as generic in Ireland. If the advert names a recruiter, use their name.
PDF or Word for a cover letter in Ireland?+
Send a PDF unless the job advert or recruiter specifically asks for Word. Keep a .docx master so you can tailor it in a few minutes for each application.
Should I mention my visa or work permit status in an Irish cover letter?+
Yes, in one line. For example "I hold a Stamp 4 and do not require sponsorship" or "I am eligible for the Critical Skills Employment Permit". Leaving it out is one of the most common reasons international applications are quietly rejected in Ireland.
What is the difference between an Irish and a US cover letter?+
Irish cover letters are shorter, more factual and less self-promotional. Replace superlatives with two or three specific results, mirror the wording of the job advert, and close with a concrete ask such as a 20 minute call rather than a general statement of enthusiasm.
