IT jobs in the UK: sponsorship, cities and strategy

How the Skilled Worker route actually works for technology roles, why the sponsor licence register should shape your entire target list, which UK cities are worth applying to beyond London, and what British recruiters expect on a CV.

The roles with the most sponsorship

Software engineering

Backend and full stack lead the volume, with financial services and consultancy driving the London market. Java, Python, .NET, TypeScript and Go dominate the advertised requirements.

Cloud and platform

AWS, Azure, Kubernetes, Terraform and site reliability engineering. Persistent shortage, and the area where a recent certification most reliably shortens the screening process.

Data and cybersecurity

Data engineering, analytics engineering and security operations. Regulated sectors hire heavily here and are often the most experienced sponsors of overseas candidates.

The sponsor licence is the whole game

In the UK, an employer can only hire you from overseas if they hold a sponsor licence and can issue a certificate of sponsorship. This is not a preference, it is a legal precondition, and it is why so many strong applications from abroad receive no reply.

The government publishes the register of licensed sponsors. Building your target list from that register, filtered to your sector and city, changes your response rate more than any other single action in your search.

Beyond the licence, employers weigh the salary threshold for the occupation code and their own appetite for the administrative work. Senior and shortage roles clear both hurdles most easily, which is why mid and senior applicants from abroad succeed far more often than entry level ones.

Where to apply beyond London

London has the volume, but competition per role is brutal and living costs absorb much of the salary premium.

CityStrongest sectorsWhy it is worth targeting
LondonFintech, consultancy, enterprise, mediaLargest role volume and highest salaries, with the highest competition and living costs
ManchesterDigital, media, e-commerce, public sector techGrowing engineering base with far lower costs and shorter shortlists
EdinburghFinancial services, data, fintechStrong data and finance engineering demand with an established sponsor base
BristolAerospace, semiconductors, softwareDeep engineering culture and less competition than the South East
LeedsHealth tech, retail tech, financeSteady demand and a noticeably lower cost of living
CambridgeDeep tech, biotech, research engineeringSpecialist roles where experienced sponsors are the norm

Sector strengths are indicative and shift year to year. Always confirm an employer's sponsor status on the official register before investing time in an application.

What UK recruiters expect on a CV

  • ·Two pages, reverse chronological, no photo and no date of birth.
  • ·A short professional summary at the top that names your specialism in the same words the job ad uses.
  • ·Results with figures in every role, not responsibility lists.
  • ·A clear technical skills section that mirrors the posting's keywords for applicant tracking systems.
  • ·Your visa position and availability stated plainly, ideally in one line under your contact details.
  • ·UK-relevant context where you have it: regulated environments, standards, clients or certifications.

How to run the UK search

01

Build your list from the sponsor register

Filter licensed sponsors by sector and city, then cross reference their open roles. Everything else in your search depends on this list being right.

02

Decide on a city strategy

Applying everywhere at once weakens every application. Pick a primary city and one secondary, and reflect that choice in your CV and LinkedIn.

03

Front-load the keywords

UK applicant tracking systems screen hard on exact terms. Mirror the posting's language for your stack, your domain and your level.

04

Apply early and consistently

UK postings attract very high volume within days. A steady weekly rhythm of well-targeted applications beats occasional bursts.

05

Prepare for a competency interview

British processes lean heavily on structured competency questions. Prepare six STAR stories that cover conflict, failure, influence, delivery, ambiguity and leadership.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get an IT job in the UK with visa sponsorship?+

Yes, through the Skilled Worker visa, but only with an employer that holds a sponsor licence. Most technology occupations are eligible. The decisive step is filtering your applications to companies on the published register of licensed sponsors, because an employer without a licence cannot hire you regardless of how good your interview goes.

Which UK cities hire the most tech talent?+

London has by far the largest volume, driven by fintech, consultancy, media and enterprise. Manchester, Edinburgh, Bristol, Leeds and Cambridge all have real engineering employment with lower competition per role and much lower living costs, and many of those employers also hold sponsor licences.

Is the UK or Ireland easier for a non-EU tech professional?+

The UK has more roles in absolute terms, but every hire depends on the employer holding a sponsor licence. Ireland has fewer roles, yet the Critical Skills Employment Permit route is more predictable for eligible occupations. Many people apply to both and let the offers decide.

Do UK employers accept CVs from candidates abroad?+

Many do, particularly for senior and shortage roles, but a CV with no UK context gets less attention. State your visa position plainly, give a realistic availability date, and if you have any UK-relevant experience, clients, standards or certifications, make them visible in the first third of the page.

What technologies appear most in UK job ads?+

Java, Python, .NET, TypeScript and Go on the engineering side; SQL, Python, dbt, Spark and Power BI in data; AWS, Azure, Kubernetes and Terraform in cloud and platform. Financial services exposure is a strong differentiator in London specifically.

How long does the UK hiring process take?+

Typically four to eight weeks from first contact to offer, then additional time for the certificate of sponsorship and visa application. Plan for months rather than weeks in total, and keep applying while you are in process with any single employer.
