What a career guidance counsellor does

Guidance counselling in Ireland grew out of the education system. Most counsellors are trained to help someone choose a path: a Leaving Cert student picking a CAO course, an adult considering a return to study, someone deciding between two very different fields.

Typical work looks like this:

• Aptitude and interest testing
• Information about courses, funding and entry routes
• Exploring options when you genuinely do not know what you want
• Support around study decisions rather than hiring decisions

What a career coach does

A career coach starts from the assumption that you are going into the market, or already in it, and something is not converting. The work is practical and it is measured in interviews and offers.

Typical work looks like this:

• Deciding on a target: roles, sectors and a real list of employers
• Rewriting the CV in the Irish format, tuned for the ATS but still readable
• Rebuilding LinkedIn so recruiters searching in Dublin, Cork or Galway actually find you
• Interview practice, including salary and the visa or sponsorship question
• A weekly routine mixing applications, direct outreach and referrals

Where the lines blur

Some situations sit in the middle. A sector change after fifteen years, or a move to Ireland where you know your profession but not how it works here, involves both direction and execution. In practice a good coach will spend the first session on direction anyway, because there is no point polishing a CV that points nowhere.
