CV Template UK 2026
A UK CV is not a US resume. It is not the same as an Irish CV either. Get the format wrong and British recruiters bin it in under 8 seconds, no matter how strong your experience is.
This is the exact 2-page structure that works in 2026 for London, Manchester, Edinburgh and Bristol.
What makes a UK CV different
- 2 pages max. One page reads as junior, three pages reads as unfocused.
- No photo, no age, no marital status, no nationality. These trigger bias concerns and some recruiters will reject on sight.
- Reverse chronological. Most recent role first, always.
- British English spelling. "Organised", "specialised", "programme". Recruiters notice.
- Personal statement at the top. 3 to 4 lines, not a US-style objective.
The 2026 UK CV structure
1. Header
Full name (larger font), city + county, phone with +44 country code, professional email, LinkedIn URL. Nothing else.
2. Personal statement (3 to 4 lines)
Who you are, what you specialise in, what value you bring. Tailored to the role.
"Data analyst with 5 years' experience turning SQL and Python pipelines into commercial decisions for retail and SaaS companies. Currently leading reporting for a £40m e-commerce brand. Looking to join a product-led team where analytics drives strategy, not just dashboards."
3. Key skills (2 columns, 6 to 10 bullets)
Hard skills and tools only. No soft skills like "team player". Save those for the cover letter.
4. Professional experience (bulk of the CV)
For each role: Job title | Company | Location | Dates. Then 4 to 6 bullets. Each bullet:
- Starts with a strong verb (Delivered, Led, Reduced, Launched)
- Contains a number: £, %, users, time saved
- Focuses on outcome, not task
Weak: "Responsible for managing the reporting team." Strong: "Led a team of 4 analysts, cut month-end reporting time from 9 days to 2 and saved £180k/year in contractor spend."
5. Education
Degree, institution, dates. UK employers only care about grade (2:1, First) for graduate roles or your first 2 years post-uni.
6. Certifications & languages (optional)
AWS, PMP, CIMA, native/fluent language levels.
What to leave OFF a UK CV in 2026
- Photo
- Date of birth or age
- Marital status
- Nationality or visa status (unless the ad specifically asks)
- Full home address (city + county is enough)
- References ("available on request" wastes a line, everyone assumes it)
- Hobbies, unless they are genuinely relevant
ATS in the UK
Most large UK employers use Workday, SmartRecruiters, Greenhouse or Oracle Recruiting. To pass their filters:
- Save as .docx or PDF (both work, .docx is safer for older systems)
- No tables, no text boxes, no columns for the parsed sections
- Use standard section headings: "Professional Experience", "Education", "Skills"
- Match keywords from the job ad exactly (if they say "stakeholder management", use those words)

Working from abroad or on a visa?
If you're applying from outside the UK, read our guide to finding a UK job from abroad without sponsorship alongside this one. Your CV needs a UK phone number (get a free eSIM) and a UK-format address if you have one, otherwise "Relocating to London, [month]".

Frequently asked questions
What length should a UK CV be?
Two pages. One page for graduates, two for experienced hires. Three pages will be filtered out.
Should I put a photo on my UK CV?
No. UK recruiters expect a text-only CV. A photo breaks ATS and raises bias concerns.
Can I use my US resume in the UK?
Not directly. UK CVs are longer, include a personal statement, and use British English spelling.
Do I need a cover letter with my UK CV?
Yes for most professional roles. Keep it to one page and mirror the job ad language.
