Does Career Coaching Actually Work? What Changes and What Does Not
What career coaching genuinely improves, what it cannot fix, and the honest timeline for seeing results in a job search.

Career coaching works when it changes behaviour: sharper positioning, a better CV, practised interview answers and a weekly routine. It does not create qualifications or vacancies. Most people see interview rates shift in two to six weeks.
Does career coaching actually work?
Yes, but not in the way the marketing usually suggests. Coaching does not open hidden doors. It changes the inputs to your search, and better inputs produce better outputs. Here is what that looks like in practice.
What reliably changes
Your positioning. Most stalled searches are a translation problem. You are describing what you did instead of the problem you solve. Fixing this often changes response rates faster than anything else.
Your CV response rate. A CV rewritten for the market you are actually applying to, with the keywords a system will scan for and the clarity a human needs in eight seconds, gets more replies. This is measurable within weeks.
Your interview performance. Practising answers out loud, with feedback, is uncomfortable and it works. Competency questions in particular are a skill, not a personality trait.
Your salary outcome. People who prepare a number, evidence and a script negotiate better than people who improvise. It is the least emotional, highest return part of the whole process.
Your consistency. A weekly routine beats motivation. Accountability is a large part of what you are paying for and most people underrate it.
What does not change
- Coaching does not create vacancies that do not exist
- It does not replace a licence, a degree or a visa you need
- It does not make a genuinely unrealistic target realistic, though it will help you find the nearest realistic one
- It does not work if you do not do the work between sessions
Any coach promising a guaranteed job is selling something they cannot control.
An honest timeline
Weeks 1 to 2: clarity on target roles, CV and LinkedIn rebuilt. This is the part that feels like progress but has no external proof yet.
Weeks 2 to 6: application response rates change. If they do not, the target or the positioning is wrong and you adjust.
Weeks 4 to 10: interviews, and the work shifts to performance and negotiation.
Months 2 to 4: typical time to offer for a considered move. Add time if you also need an employment permit.
If you are three months in with no change at all, something in the diagnosis was wrong. A good coach says that out loud rather than selling you more sessions.
How to measure it yourself
Track four numbers: applications sent, replies received, interviews booked, final rounds reached. If replies improve, positioning worked. If interviews improve but offers do not, the work is now interview performance. This tells you far more than how motivated you feel.
The uncomfortable part
The clients who get results are the ones who accept feedback quickly, apply to fewer roles with more effort, and keep going after rejections. Coaching accelerates that. It does not substitute for it.
If you want an honest read on which of these is your actual blocker, start with a free consultation and bring the numbers above.

Frequently asked questions
Does career coaching really work?
It works when it changes your inputs: positioning, CV, interview performance and weekly routine. Those are measurable. It cannot create vacancies or replace qualifications you do not have.
How long does career coaching take to show results?
Application reply rates usually shift within two to six weeks of fixing positioning and CV. A full career move typically takes two to four months, longer if an employment permit is involved.
How do I measure whether coaching is working?
Track applications sent, replies, interviews booked and final rounds. Improving replies means positioning worked. Interviews without offers means the next work is interview performance.
What if career coaching does not work for me?
If nothing has changed after roughly three months, the diagnosis was likely wrong. A good coach will say so and change the approach rather than sell more sessions.
