How to choose a career coach in Ireland: 9 questions to ask first
The market is unregulated, so the questions you ask in the first call matter more than any certification on the website.
Career coaching in Ireland is unregulated, so the title alone tells you nothing. Ask about hiring experience, what each session produces, whether the CV is written with you or for you, what happens if it does not work, and listen for whether the first call gives you something useful for free.
How to choose a career coach in Ireland
There is no licence required to call yourself a career coach in Ireland. Some are excellent. Some sell motivation at consultancy prices. The difference shows up fast if you ask the right questions.
1. Have you worked inside hiring?
Coaching from someone who has read CVs at volume, sat on interview panels or worked with recruiters is a different product from coaching learned entirely on a certification course. Ask where their view of the Irish market comes from.
2. Who are your clients usually?
A coach who mostly works with Irish public sector managers is not the right fit for a software engineer relocating from São Paulo, and vice versa. You want someone whose typical client looks like you.
3. What do I walk out of each session with?
Good answer: a target list, a rewritten CV section, three practised answers, a plan for the week. Vague answer: clarity, confidence, alignment. Those are outcomes, not deliverables, and you cannot check whether you got them.
4. Do you write my CV or do we write it together?
Both are legitimate, but they are different services at different prices. Done-for-you is faster. Done-with-you means you can update it yourself in two years. Just make sure you know which you are buying.
5. How do you handle the visa or sponsorship conversation?

6. What does it cost, fully?

7. What happens if it does not work?
Nobody can guarantee a job, and you should be suspicious of anyone who does. But you can ask what happens if you finish the package and nothing changed. A clear answer is a good sign, whatever the answer is.
8. Can you describe a client like me and what changed?
Not a testimonial wall. A specific story: where they started, what was blocking them, what was changed, what happened. Someone who has done the work can tell that story in two minutes.
9. How do you use AI?
In 2026 the honest answer is "constantly, for drafts and research, never for judgement". A coach who pretends AI does not exist is behind. What the first call should feel like
Most coaches in Ireland offer a free intro call. Treat it as the audition. If you leave with one thing you can use even if you never pay them, that is a good signal. If it was thirty minutes of pressure and a discount that expires tonight, that is also a signal.
