Interview Questions Ireland 2026: The 12 You Will Almost Certainly Be Asked
Irish interviews have a distinct rhythm, competency-based, culture-heavy, and often multi-stage. Here are the 12 questions Dublin hiring managers use most, with sample answers.

How Irish interviews are actually structured
Most professional roles in Ireland go through 3 rounds: recruiter screen (30 min), hiring manager (45-60 min), then a panel or task. Government, banks and multinationals often add a competency-based interview using the STAR method. Startups skip that and lean on culture fit.
The 12 questions to prepare
1. "Walk me through your CV"
3-minute story: where you started, 2-3 pivots, why you are here talking to them. Rehearse until it sounds natural, not memorised.
2. "Why Ireland?"
If you are relocating, they will ask. Have a real answer, quality of life, EU access, industry cluster, specific opportunity. "I want to leave my current country" is not enough.
3. "Why this company specifically?"
Research 3 recent news items, a product launch, a funding round, a strategic hire. Reference one.
4. "Tell me about a time you handled conflict at work" (STAR)
Situation, Task, Action, Result, 90 seconds. Irish interviewers reward candour: real conflict with a real outcome beats a diplomatic non-answer.
5. "What is your biggest weakness?"
Pick something genuine and show what you are doing about it. "I am a perfectionist" is dead.
6. "Where do you see yourself in 3-5 years?"
Show ambition that fits their trajectory. "I want your job" is only funny in movies.
7. "Tell me about a project you led"
Numbers, timeline, team size, outcome. Own the parts that were yours.
8. "How do you handle feedback?"
Give a specific example of feedback you received, what you changed, and the result.
9. "What are your salary expectations?"
Have a researched range (use payscale.ie, Morgan McKinley, Glassdoor). If pushed, give a range €5-10k wide. Never a single number.
10. "Do you have a work permit?"
Answer directly. Stamp 4, Critical Skills Permit, EU citizen, whatever it is, be clear. Uncertainty here kills applications.
11. "Tell me about a failure and what you learned"
Pick a real failure. Show ownership, learning, and what you do differently now.
12. "Do you have any questions for us?"
Always yes. 3 questions minimum: one about the team, one about the role in 90 days, one about the company's biggest challenge this year.
What Irish interviewers are secretly assessing
Beyond your answers, they are watching for: warmth (Ireland is a relationship market), directness (no rambling), and self-awareness (own your gaps). Craic-friendly does not mean unprofessional; it means human.
