Skilled Worker Visa UK 2026: What Actually Changed

The UK Skilled Worker route is still the main way non-UK/Irish nationals move to Britain for work. Since April 2024 the general salary threshold has been £38,700, and the going rates for each occupation code were rebased using ONS 2023 data. In 2026 the Home Office confirmed the threshold stays, with annual inflation uplifts for going rates.

The three numbers that matter

1. General threshold: £38,700 (or the going rate for your SOC 2020 code, whichever is higher).
2. New entrants / PhD roles / shortage-adjacent roles: reduced thresholds still exist but the old Shortage Occupation List was replaced by the Immigration Salary List in April 2024.
3. Health & Care Worker visa: separate route, £29,000 threshold, but closed to overseas care worker recruitment from March 2024.

Step 1, Find a licensed sponsor

Only employers on the Home Office register of licensed sponsors can issue you a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS). Download the CSV, filter by your city and industry, and target companies that already sponsor, not companies that "might".

Step 2, Match the SOC 2020 code

Your job title on the CoS must match an eligible SOC 2020 occupation code. If the code the employer picks doesn't match your actual duties, the visa is refused. This is the #1 reason we see applications rejected.

Step 3, Prove the money

• 28 days of bank statements showing at least £1,270 held for 28 consecutive days (unless the sponsor A-rates and certifies maintenance).
• Your CoS salary must be paid, HMRC PAYE records get cross-checked at extension.

Common refusal reasons in 2026

• Salary below the going rate for the SOC code (even if above £38,700).
• CoS issued more than 3 months before application.
• English language evidence expired.
• TB test missing for applicants from listed countries.

Costs (2026)

• Application fee: £719-£1,519 depending on length and whether the role is on the Immigration Salary List.
• Immigration Health Surcharge: £1,035/year.
• Sponsor also pays the Immigration Skills Charge (£1,000/year for medium/large employers).

What to do this week

1. Download the sponsor register CSV and filter to your target city.
2. Cross-reference with LinkedIn, see which companies actively advertise roles.
3. Pick 20 companies, apply to open roles, and mention visa sponsorship only after the first interview.
