How to find UK companies that sponsor visas in 2026

The licensed sponsor register is public. Here is how to use it properly, filter it down to companies that actually hire people like you, and get in front of them.

Quick summary

The UK publishes a full register of licensed sponsors. Filter it by your city and sector, cross check each company against its live vacancies, and approach the ones already hiring. That list of 40 to 60 realistic employers beats a thousand cold applications.

How to find UK companies that sponsor visas in 2026

Most people looking for sponsorship search job boards for the word "sponsorship" and give up after two weeks. That is backwards. The UK government publishes the entire list of employers licensed to sponsor Skilled Worker visas, and it is free. Your job is to turn that list into a short, realistic target list.

Start with the register, not the job boards

The register of licensed sponsors is a public spreadsheet updated regularly. It contains tens of thousands of organisations, from four person consultancies to hospitals and banks. Two things to understand before you open it:

A licence means the company can sponsor. It does not mean they will, and it does not mean they have a vacancy today.

A company missing from the register cannot sponsor you right now, no matter how much they like you. Some will apply for a licence for the right candidate, but that adds months.

Filter it down in four passes

Pass one, your route. Keep only sponsors with the Skilled Worker route listed. Ignore rows that only cover temporary or creative routes unless those apply to you.

Pass two, your geography. Filter by the towns and cities you would genuinely move to. London gives you volume, but Manchester, Leeds, Birmingham, Bristol, Glasgow and Edinburgh have far less competition per role.

Pass three, your sector. Search company names and match them against your industry. This is imperfect, so pair it with a quick look at each company website.

Pass four, hiring activity. Check whether each remaining company posted a relevant vacancy in the last 90 days. A licensed sponsor with no hiring is a dead end this quarter.

You should end up with 40 to 60 companies. That is your target list for the next three months.

Check that the role clears the bar

Sponsorship is not only about the employer. The role itself has to sit on the eligible occupation list and pay at or above both the general salary threshold and the going rate for that occupation code. A junior title at a licensed sponsor can still fail on salary. Our Skilled Worker visa guide walks through the thresholds and the exceptions.

Approach them in the right order

For each company on your list, do this in sequence.

  1. Apply to the live vacancy through their own careers site, not an aggregator.
  2. Find the hiring manager or team lead on LinkedIn and send a short note referencing the specific role and one relevant result you delivered.
  3. If there is no live role, send a two paragraph note to the team lead saying what you do, what you would take on, and that you need sponsorship. Being upfront saves everyone time and filters out the companies that will waste your month.

Keep the sponsorship line short and factual. Do not apologise for it and do not bury it. Something like "I would need Skilled Worker sponsorship, and the role sits above the going rate for the occupation code" reads as competent, not needy.

What actually moves the needle

Occupation code fluency. If you can name the occupation code your role sits under and its going rate, you sound like someone who has done their homework. Smaller employers often have not.

Shortage roles. Health, care, engineering and certain technical roles carry lower thresholds and more employer appetite. If your experience is adjacent, position toward the shortage side of it.

A UK format CV. A two page, no photo, no date of birth, achievement led CV. If yours still looks like the one you use at home, start with our free UK CV templates.

Volume with a shorter list. Twenty applications to companies that can sponsor beats two hundred to companies that cannot.

Common mistakes

Applying only to household names. Everyone does that. The mid sized companies on the register are where sponsorship offers actually happen.

Trusting a recruiter to know. Many agency recruiters will tell you a client sponsors when they have not checked. Verify on the register yourself.

Waiting for the perfect role. Sponsorship offers usually come from the third or fourth best fitting role, not the first.

Ignoring the going rate. If the salary is below it, no amount of enthusiasm fixes the application.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find UK companies that sponsor visas?

Use the UK government register of licensed sponsors, filter it by the Skilled Worker route, your city and your sector, then check which of those companies have posted relevant vacancies in the last 90 days.

Does being on the sponsor register mean a company will sponsor me?

No. It means they hold a licence and are allowed to sponsor. Whether they will depends on the role, the salary, and whether they have an open vacancy they cannot fill locally.

Should I mention that I need sponsorship in my application?

Yes, briefly and factually. Hiding it wastes weeks and burns goodwill. One clear line stating that you need Skilled Worker sponsorship is enough.

Do smaller UK companies sponsor visas?

Many do. Mid sized employers make up a large share of the register and usually have less competition per role than the household names everyone applies to.
